Dental Extractions

Tooth extraction is recommended when dentists find out that the tooth cannot be saved in any case and removal of tooth is more beneficial for oral health of the patient as compared to retaining it. The tooth which needs to be extracted may be severely decayed, badly damaged or may be in a position where it is not fully erupted and is causing problems to nearby teeth. How the extraction is performed depends on the status and position of the tooth. When a tooth is only partially erupted or is broken at the base of the dental crown, it may have to be extracted through surgery.

Simple extraction and surgical extraction are the two main types of dental extraction procedures. Under surgical extraction, some portion of the supporting bone may have to be removed for the purpose of accessing the tooth. Therefore the procedure is further classified based on the amount of bone that has to be removed.

Tooth extraction is the last option chosen by a dentist when he/she finds out that there is no other way to protect the tooth. Since the process results in loss of hard tissues, dentists perform thorough risk and benefit analysis before recommending tooth extraction.

Wisdom teeth are the last pair of teeth to erupt. The wisdom teeth either erupt partially or do not erupt at all in most of us. Partially erupted wisdom tooth or those teeth which remain within the supporting bone cause problems by increasing the risk of infection and applying pressure on the nearby teeth. Wisdom teeth extraction is recommended in order to protect patients from gum infection and improve oral health.

Dentures are false teeth that replace all teeth in a dental arch. These artificial teeth restoration can be supported by dental implants, natural teeth or by gums. Those dentures which are fixed over dental implants are called implant-supported dentures. The teeth restoration helps improve quality of life by aiding in biting and chewing functions and helping maintain shape of the face.

Dentures should be taken care of properly to ensure healthy living. Cleaning dentures on a daily is absolutely necessary to stay away from gum problems. In addition to maintaining oral hygiene, patients should visit the dental office routinely to get their dentures checked. Over a period of time, there are changes in the gums and the hard tissues of the oral cavity. This may bring about changes in the fit of dentures leading to discomfort. Partial dentures or partials are those dental restorations that can replace one or more teeth in a row. They can be supported by natural teeth or by dental implants. These restorations can be removed from the mouth when necessary. Different types of materials are used to fabricate partials. Acrylic dentures are used as temporary restorations while metal base partials work well as permanent ones. The fit and finish of dentures play a crucial role in how effectively they can aid biting and chewing functions.
